Provocative, inspiring new video from investee organisation Arpan. Pooja Taparia and her team are at the forefront of the movement to prevent child sexual abuse and heal its survivors. The day they achieve their mission - a society free from child sexual abuse - can't come soon enough.
Investee Dhruv Lakra's social enterprise Mirakle Couriers has been making headlines since it launched. The company employs low-income deaf adults as professional couriers, providing them an opportunity to earn a good living and become a vital part of mainstream society.
This year, the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment has recognised Mirakle Couriers with its prestigious National Award for the Empowerment of People With Disabilities. The award ceremony is in Dellhi on the 3rd of December and will be conferred by H.E. President of India.
We're proud of the phenomenal work and impact that Mirakle Couriers creates. Great job, team.
Prashant Borhade is one of UnLtd India's youngest investees. The son of domestic workers, he grew up in a basti in which his parents pushed hard to keep him in school. Unfortunately, within Bombay's under-resourced municipal education system, many students don't receive the attention they need to develop academically. Prashant launched JYOT to provide supplemental classes to the children in his slum.
Prashant and his team do great work - they use art, games, and fun to get kids excited about learning. JYOT enables children to learn life skills and connect to each other and their community in positive ways. But what's truly remarkable is the story behind the initiative.
Prashant's journey in launching JYOT is the spotlight of The Freedom of Expression Movement's first "Film for Change." TFOEM (also an UnLtd India investee) is producing ten of these films - each featuring a different investee - by partnering up with passionate filmmakers and funders.
After you watch this video, be sure to check out TFOEM's social network, bethekey.in, for the rest of the films as they get released. And share this video far and wide! TFOEM donates Rs 5 to JYOT every time someone views it.
Well done TFOEM, JYOT, and everyone involved in the creation of this fine film.
UnLtd India is proud to present Social Mashup. In just over a week, (2nd and 3rd of December), the start-up social entrepreneurship movement will come together in Hyderabad for two groundbreaking days of conversations, connections and inspiration. We want you to be there.
Who’s invited? Start-up social entrepreneurs, senior social entrepreneurs, funders/investors and anyone else interested in early stage social entrepreneurship
What will you get? You’ll have direct access to resources that meet your immediate and long-term needs. You might meet your mentor or mentee, your investor or investee, and your CEO or team member. And did we mention that we'll have a selection of artists and musicians in residence, all set to spark your creativity? Believe us, you're in for a dynamic, inspiring, affordable and fun two days that truly captures the spirit of a start-up!
What will you not get? Panels that seem to be designed for the panelists, talks that fail to inspire and networking that begins and ends with an exchange of business cards
It's fitting that Social Mashup will take place at the Indian School of Business, one of Asia's premier academic institutions focusing on entrepreneurship and innovation. As an added perk, Mashup participants get FREE ENTRY to ISB's Leadership Summit, which will serve as an incredible complement to the lessons, inspiration, and connections of Social Mashup.
Register today for Mashup and make sure you book an extra night at your hotel for Leadership Summit.
See you in Hyderabad!
Regular readers of this blog know that investee organisation Blind with Camera teaches photography to visually-impaired and blind people. The art that participants create is stunning - be sure to visit the online galleries - and the impact that the organisation has on both sighted and non-sighted people is tremendous.
In Bombay, we've been lucky to have regular access to Blind with Camera's mind-opening exhibitions and programmes. In a few days, the people of London will get a chance to see the world through the lens of the blind as well. On 26th November, investee Partho Bhomwick and his team will present The View from Here, an illustrated history of Blind with Camera, at the Nehru Center.
If you're in London, this is a special opportunity not to be missed. More information is in the invite below.
Interested in social enterprise in Southeast Asia? This one's from our partner organisation, UnLtd Thailand.
The Regional Social Enterprise Knowledge & Partnership Symposium presents Social Enterprise for a Sustainable Future in Asia. This two-day conference aims to facilitate a network high impact organisations in East Asia in order to foster the development and growth of the sector in the region.
Held from November 15-16 (short notice, we know), it's put on by SEnetwork.asia.
Investee Pooja Taparia's organisation Arpan is doing incredible things for the children of Bombay. Through therapy and preventative education, Arpan's crusade against child sexual abuse is touching the lives of thousands. The organisation is doing an event on the eve of Children's Day uses drama to address an issue that society would like to sweep under the rug.
From Arpan:
Do join us on 13th November at 8 pm at the Y B Chavan Auditorium, Mumbai in solidarity to all children who must be protected.
A play written by Mahesh Dattani and directed by Lillette Dubey, it is an intense and gripping tale of love and betrayal that explores the brutal severance of the unbreakable bond between adult and child. A mother discovers the truth about her daughter, which sets them both on a journey of self discovery about their lives and their inextricably linked past.

This November 26, Pooja Taparia will receive this year's Civil Society Karmaveer Puraskaar for her crusade to end child sexual abuse. The Karmaveer Puraskaars are awarded by the Indian Confederation of NGOs (iCONGO); they recognize people from all segments of society doing incredible things. In the past, investees Inir Pinheiro of Grassroutes, Nikita Ketkar of Masoom, and Sailesh Mishra of Silver Innings have received Puraskaars as well.
Congratulations Pooja! We are always proud of you.
