Farewell, Alex

Last week, we bid a teary farewell to Bombay HUB manager and overall enlightened being Alex Baine. Alex has been part of the UnLtd India team for more than a year and, aside from molding the HUB into what it is today, is also everybody's best friend.

It's a bittersweet goodbye - in March, Alex will be returning to his native place, London, as a start-up social entrepreneur, and we're bursting with pride and excitement for him. He'll be launching an initiative that uses football as a platform for bringing people together from across different cultural backgrounds, celebrating the diversity that is the cornerstone of his home city. If you're interested in learning more, leave a comment here.

We couldn't let Alex go without a proper dance party hosted at (where else?) Bombay HUB. For the all the laughter, wisdom, and wonderful times, thank you Alex!

Social Mashup insights and highlights

Two weeks ago, UnLtd India brought the start-up social entrepreneurship movement together from across India. Start-up changemakers, senior social entrepreneurs, students, and investors all brought unique energy that multiplied in each other's presence.  This was a platform to share inspiration, learnings, and ideas.

The programme was multi-faceted; it combined inspiring talks with practitioners' workshops, one-on-one coaching sessions, long lunches and live music. Some of the insight that got us all thinking:

"Always remember why you do what you do - social entrepreneurship is channeling creative energy beautifully. Write beauty into your organisation's DNA and achieve real impact." Sachin Malhan, Inclusive Planet

The social entrepreneurship world fetishizes the individual entrepreneur, new ideas, attribution, and evaluation for the sake of evaluation. If unchecked, these fetishes can hinder actual change. Sunil Abraham, Centre for Internet & Society

On rescuing victims of trafficking and forced prostitution: "I see so much evil, its tough to believe there is any good. But it is key to believe in the goodness of people." Sunitha Krishnan, Prajwala

"When we redefine fear - realise that it's simply an illusion, our mind's way of convincing to not to do what we want to do - we can transform ourselves, our country and our world." Vipin Thekkekalathil, Ashoka's Youth Venture India

Many moving pieces made Social Mashup an incredible experience. Our partners, Ashoka India, Indian School of Business, and Beyond Profit provided high-impact content, a wonderful venue, and in-depth media coverage, respectively. Our team and volunteers (thanks AISEC and IDEX Fellows!) worked tirelessly to make sure everything came together. House of Waters gave us an incredible evening of music and dance.  And, maybe most importantly, our participants brought the open-minds, passion, and enthusiasm needed to make social change a reality. Thank you all!

Stay tuned for updates and info about next year's Mashup.
